"The uniqueness and characteristic of our approach [to counter Covid-19] is that we took the initiative to immediately test all those at risk, even if they had no symptoms," said Andry Rajoelina, President of Madagascar.
"We can say that the measures taken to control the epidemic have been effective. And we've even received praise from the WHO," he added.
The massive rapid tests were immediately carried out thanks to the timely arrival of test kits donated by China’s Jack Ma Foundation and Alibaba Foundation. Within 120 hours since Madagascar announced its first confirmed cases of Covid-19, the first batch of donation arrived at Madagascar on March 25, including 100 000 masks and 20 000 test kits.
President Rajoelina received the donation at the airport, expressed gratitude to the timely help of Chinese institutions, and spoke highly of the effect of this donation in the upcoming nationwide test. The donation was widely reported by CCTV News and Malagasy media.
The second batch of medical materials donated by Jack Ma Foundation with the help of the WHO arrived in Madagascar on April 15, including ventilators, swabs and extraction kits, and suites and face shields.
"The virus knows no borders; it is the common enemy of humanity. At this difficult time, we must work together to fight the pandemic," said Yang Xiaorong, Chinese Ambassador to Madagascar, upon the arrival of the donation. "China will continue to offer aid to Madagascar as much as possible and stands ready to strengthen cooperation with the Malagasy side to win this battle together."
"We would like to thank the Chinese government and Jack Ma Foundation for the help and support to Madagascar in fighting against Covid-19. The country lacked medical supplies, and some key equipments have almost been used up before this delivery," said Ahmad Ahmad, Minister of Public Health of Madagascar. "The aid was indeed timely. The support and help of China will enhance our capacity and confidence to counter Covid-19."
